Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” won the outstanding variety series Emmy, its final season ending in May. Colbert used his acceptance speech to advocate for the employment of his crew.
Colbert thanked those he interviewed over the past 21 years, stating, “Thank you for coming on to talk to this idiot, I want you to know that you were the perfect guest. The segment went great, and I’m sorry I forgot to play your clip.” He also expressed gratitude to his wife, Evie McGee, calling her his “favorite guest.”
Colbert highlighted the value of late shows as “fantastic incubator[s] for young people to come in to learn to work professionally on a deadline in cooperation in collaboration.” He noted his writing team had already won an Emmy for variety series writing and urged industry professionals to hire them, saying, “They are all tech avail. Hire them; they will make your show better, and they will make your day easier.”
“The Late Show” beat out “The Daily Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “Saturday Night Live,” and another entry for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in the newly combined outstanding variety series competition. The category merged the previously separate outstanding talk series and outstanding scripted variety categories.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences implemented a new rule where nominees in “area” awards must receive at least 90% approval from voters to win. If no show reached that threshold, the show with the highest approval would win. Ultimately, “The Late Show” was the sole winner. Prior to this, “The Late Show” had already won four Emmys.
