Valve released the first preview of SteamOS 3.9 for the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and other devices. The update includes a move to Linux 7.2 and KDE Plasma 6.7.3, along with improvements to WiFi handling and virtual machine support.
The SteamOS 3.9 Preview updates its Arch Linux package base. The SteamOS Desktop Mode now runs on KDE Plasma 6.7.3, upgrading from the previous version of Plasma 6.4.3. This change is intended to fix bugs and improve the desktop experience.
Alongside the desktop environment update, SteamOS 3.9 Preview now utilizes the Linux 7.2 stable kernel. This provides newer hardware support, better performance, and overall improvements compared to the previously used Linux 6.16 LTS kernel.
Further enhancements include a switch to WPA_Supplicant for improved WiFi handling. Preliminary support for system hibernation has been added, though it is not yet accessible through the Game Mode UI.
