Shelley Fabares, a longtime television and film actor, died August 22 at the age of 82. Her family confirmed the cause of death as pneumonia, following a diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis. Fabares had received a liver transplant 26 years prior.
Born January 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, Fabares began her Hollywood career with guest appearances in television shows during the mid-1950s. She gained prominence for her role on *The Donna Reed Show*, appearing in nearly 200 episodes over five seasons from 1958 to 1963. She then starred in several films alongside Elvis Presley before continuing her television work.
Throughout the following two decades, Fabares made guest appearances in numerous series, including *The Twilight Zone*, *The Incredible Hulk*, *Fantasy Island*, *Mork & Mindy*, *The Love Boat*, *Newhart*, and had a recurring role on *One Day at a Time*. She also portrayed the wife of Brian Piccolo in the 1971 telefilm *Brian’s Song*.
Fabares is perhaps best known for her role as Christine Armstrong on the ABC sitcom *Coach*. For this role, she received Emmy nominations in both 1993 and 1994 during the show’s nine-season, 200-episode run. Her final credits included voice work as Superman’s adoptive mother, Martha Kent, in episodes of *Superman: The Animated Series*, *Justice League*, and *Superman: Brainiac Attacks*.
