A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border on Sunday, shortly after a train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and security advisors from several European Union states passed through the area. Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state rail operator, stated the diplomatic train had departed the Yahodyn station ahead of schedule while en route back from a security conference in Kyiv, and that it was highly probable the drone’s intended target was the train. Bildt shared a video of the attack on X, noting the train was evacuated and no one was hurt. Another train, carrying former CIA Director David Petraeus, remained at the station when the drone struck.
Earlier on Sunday, a Russian drone also hit a truck less than a mile from Polish territory, temporarily closing the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing. Ukrainian officials report a gas station was also struck, injuring two drivers and damaging a supermarket. Ukrzaliznytsia said it “constantly adjusts train schedules” to guard against strikes, and has seen widespread delays across the country, with some trains running over 18 hours behind schedule.
Johnson, in a post on X, questioned the rationale behind targeting a stationary locomotive near the Polish border, characterizing it as a senseless attack on civilian railways. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strikes “Putin’s terror” and urged European countries to impose a full trade embargo and ban Russians from entering their countries. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the strikes targeted railway infrastructure used to transport military cargo from European countries. Modi and Xi offered Putin assistance in reaching a peaceful settlement, according to a Russian spokesperson, and a new round of trilateral talks among Russia, Ukraine, and the United States could take place in October, with Abu Dhabi considered as a potential venue.
