Representative Tom Kean Jr. (R-NJ) returned to the House of Representatives on Tuesday after a 117-day absence, explaining that he had been diagnosed with depression.
Kean missed over 140 votes beginning March 5 as details regarding his medical leave were not disclosed by him or those around him. On the House floor, Kean addressed his colleagues and publicly revealed the reason for his extended time away from Congress. He stated, “It is physical, it is emotional, and until you experience it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be.”
The New Jersey congressman, 57 years old, received the diagnosis from doctors, according to reports. His absence created challenges for House Republican leaders who were already navigating a narrow majority while attempting to pass legislation.
Kean’s return comes after months of speculation regarding his health. Prior to his announcement, there was limited information available about the cause of his leave. The Washington Examiner reported that Kean would cast his first vote in four months on Tuesday.
