The Denver Broncos suffered a 31-10 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in their season opener. Head coach Sean Payton identified a 60-yard touchdown run by Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker as a pivotal moment in the game.
Payton stated, “The big run is the one that hurt. We don't set an edge. We missed a tackle,” according to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. The play gave Kansas City a 21-7 lead, and the Broncos struggled to recover. Safety Brandon Jones had an opportunity to make the tackle but was unsuccessful.
The Broncos’ offense also underperformed, particularly in the second half, managing only a single field goal. Quarterback Bo Nix did not play to his usual standard, though the Chiefs’ defense also deserves credit for limiting Denver’s offensive output. Despite a strong 14-3 record in 2025, this opening game performance was uncharacteristic for the team.
The Broncos will look to rebound in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
