NASA is preparing to establish a Moon Base to support longer and more complex operations on the lunar surface. On July 30th, Shatel Bhakta, principal systems engineer for NASA’s Moon Base Program, presented details regarding the challenges and opportunities of building this base at the Lunar South Pole during NASA Stories at the Ion.
The presentation focused on the requirements for constructing a sustained presence on the moon. According to NASA, building the Moon Base will necessitate “new ideas, advanced technologies, and expertise across many fields.” The agency is actively planning for astronauts to return to the lunar surface for extended stays, necessitating infrastructure beyond what has been previously utilized.
