MotoGP is working against a rapidly approaching deadline to determine if the Qatar Grand Prix will proceed as scheduled, with the conflict in the Middle East creating uncertainty. Deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta stated the championship is in ongoing discussions with Qatari authorities, seeking a resolution quickly.
The Qatar round, originally planned for April, was moved to November 8 following the outbreak of hostilities. The Losail International Circuit is located approximately 25 miles from Al Udeid Air Base, which has been the target of Iranian rocket attacks. Ezpeleta emphasized the urgency stems from the need for teams to finalize their strategies for the closing rounds of the championship, stating, “It’s not the same managing for six events or seven.” A decision must be made before the start of the Asian tour with the Japanese Grand Prix on October 4.
However, reports suggest MotoGP is likely to cancel the Qatar race. According to The Race, a decision is expected within days, and the 2026 calendar may be reduced from 22 to 21 rounds without a replacement race. The situation is also impacting the 2027 calendar, which Ezpeleta described as “nearly set” but still dependent on regional developments. He also hinted at upcoming announcements regarding Adelaide and two new events for next season, expected in “three weeks, four weeks.”
The delay is also affecting Formula 1, now under the same ownership as MotoGP after Liberty Media’s acquisition of Dorna Sports. Formula 1 still intends to hold its Qatar and Abu Dhabi races, but the uncertainty has pushed back its 2027 calendar announcement, with Imola as a potential alternative. Formula One Management plans to make a decision toward the end of September, citing financial considerations.
