Major League Baseball warned umpire Doug Eddings for his actions toward St. Louis Cardinals rookie Hancel Rincon during his MLB debut on Friday, September 6. The warning came after Eddings told Rincon to straighten the bill of his hat.
According to a report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Eddings apologized to Rincon before Saturday’s game, prompted by the MLB admonishment for “acting inappropriately.” It is currently unclear if Eddings will face further discipline. Rincon pitched four batters before being replaced, leading to the ejection of Cardinals manager Oli Marmol for arguing with Eddings.
Several Cardinals players, and some members of the Colorado Rockies, protested Eddings’ actions by wearing their hats to the side on Saturday. Eddings initially told a pool reporter that Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman prompted his comment about Rincon’s hat. However, Goodman stated Saturday that he “never once mentioned the hat” to Eddings.
On Sunday, the Cardinals optioned Rincon to Triple-A and recalled left-handed pitcher Cooper Hjerpe. MLB rarely punishes umpires for on-field actions, and did not publicly announce any discipline in this case. Goodman expressed his frustration, stating, “I didn’t like seeing that my name was a part of it today when I didn’t say anything like that.”
