Borussia Dortmund’s (BVB) women’s team remained unbeaten after a 3-0 victory over DJK Wacker Mecklenbeck. Alex Popp scored all three goals, securing the win for BVB.
Head coach Markus Högner made changes to the starting lineup compared to the previous away game against SSV Rhade, starting Jenske Steenwijk, Noreen Günnewig, and Ronja Leubner. Jaqueline Meißner, Ramona Maier, and Rita Schumacher, who had minor injuries during the week, began the match on the bench.
Mecklenbeck adopted a defensive strategy from the opening whistle, making it difficult for BVB to establish a rhythm. In the 12th minute, BVB had a double chance with attempts from Ann-Sophie Vogel and Frederike Kempe, but Mecklenbeck’s goalkeeper, Lena Kloock, saved the latter. Alex Popp attempted a free kick in the 26th minute, which was blocked by the wall. Shortly after, Kloock saved a shot from Ronja Leubner following a corner kick.
Ronja Leubner assisted Alex Popp for the opening goal in the 33rd minute, with Popp slotting the ball into the far corner. Popp then scored again in the 41st minute, converting a cross from Enderle. In the second half, Popp completed her hat trick in the 63rd minute after a quick reaction to a Mecklenbeck turnover, bringing the score to 3-0.
Despite opportunities, Ricarda Walkling, Rita Schumacher, and Ramona Maier were unable to add a fourth goal. Late in the game, former Borussia player Jasmin Jabbes, playing for Mecklenbeck, was denied by BVB goalkeeper Laura van der Laan.
Markus Högner commented, “Credit to our opponents from Mecklenbeck, who really played well and got the maximum out of the game. Today, we were a little too careless in our actions, and at times I felt we lacked clarity. Alex Popp was the match-winner and made the difference by scoring the goals at the right moments. All in all, I see the entire team moving in a good direction.” Alex Popp stated, “Of course, I’m happy about scoring three goals, but overall we made things a little difficult for ourselves today. In situations where we could have moved the ball more cleanly, we didn’t.”
