Maggie Gyllenhaal has been a fixture at the Venice Film Festival since 2004, evolving from an actress attending premieres to a celebrated filmmaker and now, president of the competition jury. Her first appearance on the Lido was in 2004 for the premiere of *Criminal*, followed by support for her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, at the *Brokeback Mountain* premiere in 2005.
Gyllenhaal returned to Venice in 2021 with her directorial debut, *The Lost Daughter*, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley and her husband Peter Sarsgaard. The film was well-received, and Gyllenhaal won the festival’s best screenplay prize. She stated, “It was really seen in Venice, and it was really appreciated in Venice,” adding, “So I will always love Venice, aside from the fact that it’s an incredible city.”
Following another directing effort with *The Bride*, Gyllenhaal is back in Venice this year serving as president of the competition jury. She also has a short film, *Flesh Impact*, starring Johnson, Ellen Burstyn and Sarsgaard, screening out of competition. Throughout her appearances, Gyllenhaal’s style has been noted for featuring Miu Miu, Celine, black-and-white ensembles, sharp tailoring, and high jewelry.
