Louisiana State University has decided not to add former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to its roster for the 2024 season, despite a recent court order that potentially cleared the way for their eligibility. The decision comes with the threat of SEC expulsion looming had LSU added the players.
The recent legal battle stemmed from LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin’s attempts to add players who had signed NFL contracts and participated in preseason training. Adding these players would have violated SEC rules prohibiting players from joining the conference after signing professional contracts and restricting intraconference transfers outside the designated transfer portal window.
However, Judge William Jorden of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, issued a preliminary injunction last week, prohibiting the NCAA and SEC from enforcing restrictions related to eligibility, the transfer portal, and professional players returning to college football. This ruling would have allowed Wright and Harris to potentially play in Saturday’s game against Clemson.
Despite the favorable ruling, LSU opted against adding the players to the roster. The team had 103 players rostered for the Clemson game, leaving two open spots. LSU has now filled those spots with other players, bringing the total roster size to 105, effectively preventing Wright and Harris from joining the team this season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Thamel reported, “LSU football is adding two players to the school’s roster, which will complete it at 105 players…This will lock LSU’s roster for the rest of the year, which will eliminate the program’s ability to add Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.”
