LLVM developers are discussing whether to add AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md files to their Git repository to guide AI agents contributing to the project. The debate centers on the effectiveness of such files and whether they align with LLVM’s principles.
Longtime LLVM developer Nick Desaulniers initiated the discussion on LLVM Discourse. While some developers support the idea, others fear the files could introduce unnecessary noise or interfere with individual workflows. Some developers are already creating their own AGENTS.md files for private use.
Desaulniers has submitted a draft pull request for a minimal AGENTS.md file. This version instructs AI agents to consult LLVM’s documentation regarding AI tool contribution policy and coding standards. The LLVM project will determine whether to adopt the guidance file.
