Liverpool failed to sign a right-winger in the summer transfer window, including Yan Diomande who went to Real Madrid, and are now monitoring FC Basel’s Asane Sow as a potential long-term replacement for Mo Salah. The club moved away from relying on Salah and is looking to the future with young players like Sow, Florian Wirtz, and Bradley Barcola.
The decision not to replace Salah this summer was deemed necessary by Liverpool, as the club has shifted its focus towards building a team for the future. While acknowledging Salah remains a “supreme footballer,” the club is prioritizing young talent. Initial targets to fill the right-wing position included Yan Diomande, Ibrahim Mbaye, Yankuba Minteh, and Ismaila Sarr, but financial considerations and Minteh’s injury prevented any deals.
FC Basel, known for developing young players – including a young Mo Salah who made 34 goal contributions in 79 games before a move to Chelsea in 2014 – now has 20-year-old Asane Sow. Sow signed with Basel this summer from Serie C side Pro Vercelli and has quickly impressed, scoring four goals and providing four assists in his first eight games, all while playing on the right-wing. He is described as quick and effective in one-on-one situations, fitting the profile Liverpool seeks in a right-winger.
Sow, who is Senegalese, is seen as potentially following in the footsteps of both Salah and Sadio Mane. Liverpool, unable to secure Salah from Basel in 2014, may have another opportunity with Sow in 2027.
