Arthur Gea, a Frenchman who entered the US Open as a lucky loser, lost a grueling five-set match to Botic van de Zandschulp despite holding a match point. The defeat denied him the chance to become the first lucky loser to reach the US Open quarter-finals.
Gea lost in the final round of qualifying to Nishesh Basavareddy but was granted entry into the main draw after Casper Ruud withdrew due to injury. He progressed to the fourth round before falling to world No. 70 van de Zandschulp 3-6, 6-7 (0-7), 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. The match lasted five hours and 13 minutes, making it the fourth-longest in US Open history. Despite the loss, Gea will receive $480,000 in prize money, significantly more than the $66,000 he would have earned through qualifying.
Van de Zandschulp will now face top seed Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. Zverev advanced with a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Luciano Darderi. Another quarter-final matchup will feature world No. 50 Khachanov against Belgian 28th seed Alexander Blockx, who overcame a rib injury to defeat Francisco Cerundolo. Khachanov defeated Learner Tien in five sets.
