A functional mockup of Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone Ultra has been leaked online, generating mixed reactions from fans and tech experts. The device, reportedly a Chinese mockup, showcases a passport-style folding design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.
The leak came via the Canadian YouTube channel Unbox Therapy, hosted by Lewis Hilsenteger, who shared a video of the alleged prototype. Hilsenteger stated, “There’s increasing accuracy coming out of China at this point,” suggesting the mockup closely resembles the final product. The iPhone Ultra is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9.
The mockup features a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.8-inch main screen when unfolded. It also includes a two-lens camera and volume buttons positioned at the top of the device, along with additional buttons speculated to lock the fold and aid in photo/video capture. A prominent crease down the center of the screen has drawn criticism, despite previous reports suggesting a relatively seamless fold.
Viewers expressed disappointment with the prototype, with some dubbing it the “iPhold.” One critic stated, “I genuinely think Apple should sit the folding thing out,” while another commented, “Really hoping [a] folding phone doesn’t become the norm.” Concerns were also raised about the expected price tag, starting at over $2,000, with one commenter lamenting that phones are becoming as expensive as PCs and laptops.
One Redditor criticized the concept of foldable phones, stating, “The problem with foldable smartphones is they are inevitably disgusting visually and don’t respond to a new customer need. Nobody cares about having a phablet in their pocket.” Bloomberg tech reporter Mark Gurman suggested the device appears more focused on making a statement than providing practical benefits. “You don’t need a folda…”, he said.
