Filmmaker Kirill Sokolov will direct the animated feature “Alone in the Ocean,” based on the true story of Slava Kurilov’s 1974 escape from the U.S.S.R. The film is a production of Lazy Sunday and The Media Company.
Kurilov, an oceanographer and diver, sought opportunities for international expeditions but was restricted by Soviet limitations. His desire for professional fulfillment evolved into a broader yearning for personal freedom. In December 1974, he devised a plan to escape during a 20-day Soviet cruise from Vladivostok, taking advantage of the fact that the ship would not be making any stops in foreign ports, thus negating the need for an exit visa.
Kurilov intended to jump overboard near the Philippines, but ended up landing farther away than planned. He spent almost three days swimming alone before reaching Siargao. He later described these days at sea as “among the happiest of his life.” His experiences were chronicled in his autobiographical book, “Alone in the Ocean,” published in 2004 after his death in a diving accident in 1998.
The film was initially conceived as a live-action project, but filmmakers determined that animation would better allow them to depict Kurilov’s journey, blending physical reality with memory and inner experience. The film will employ a variety of animation techniques, including live-action footage, motion capture, rotoscoping, 2D and 3D animation, and water simulation.
“I’ve lived with this story for a long time,” said Sokolov, who is also directing Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi action feature “Blur.” “When we started discussing the possibility of animation, I realized that it could open the story up in a completely different way. It gives us the freedom to make Kurilov’s physical journey and his inner experience part of the same cinematic language, to make it vivid and emotional.” Roman Sokolov will serve as art director, collaborating with Kirill Sokolov and the animation team to shape the film’s visual style.
