New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson is expected to kick off Monday’s 78th Emmys ceremony with a pre-taped performance, followed by host Mariska Hargitay continuing the number live. Reba McEntire will perform a Dolly Parton song as a tribute to the late singer.
As Monday’s ceremony approaches, Variety reports that Brunson’s appearance comes as no surprise, given Hargitay’s public enthusiasm for including the Knicks and Brunson in the show. Hargitay recently stated Brunson would “definitely” be getting a role in “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,” adding that he is “kind of magnificent” and “open and ready.” Emmy executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay remained coy when asked about Brunson’s involvement, with Collins saying, “She’s got a lot of friends. Her contacts are deep.”
The opening will feature Brunson in a pre-taped segment, which Hargitay will then continue live on stage with dancers and other performers before delivering her opening monologue. Later in the evening, McEntire’s tribute to Parton will be introduced by Sally Field, who also stars in Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” McEntire and Parton were close friends and collaborators for decades, including the 2021 reworking of McEntire’s hit, “Does He Love You.”
