Iranian director Mohsen Gharaei, currently at the Venice Film Festival with his drama “Falling House,” will begin shooting a new film titled “Centrifugal Force.” The film will explore the difficult choices facing Iranians today.
“Falling House,” which premiered Wednesday in Venice’s Orizzonti sidebar, centers on a family outside Tehran facing the demolition of their home due to a redevelopment project. The film follows Rashid, the family’s patriarch and a prison guard, as he attempts to manage family unrest while being accused of corruption.
“Centrifugal Force” will be filmed in an undisclosed location outside Iran, in both Farsi and English, with Iranian and international actors. According to Gharaei, the film “will be a deeply human story about what happens when the home you love is no longer a place you can return to.” He explained that after completing “Falling House,” he found himself in exile and that migration is a painful experience when departure isn’t a choice.
The new film will focus on a family that has remained in Iran, hoping to build a life despite the country’s contradictions. Gharaei notes that in Iran, the line between surviving and truly living is precarious, and stability is never guaranteed. He describes how forced migration can feel like a collapse, creating distance between family members and challenging their perceptions of one another.
“This is where centrifugal force takes shape, drawing people away from a point to which they have been deeply attached, without necessarily knowing what lies ahead,” Gharaei said in a director’s statement. “Within this deracination, the family is as weightless as hay, easily pulled away from the center. And the further they move from it, the more they are confronted with the question of what truly connected them in the first place: geography, memory, habit, or something else for which they have no name.”
