France recorded approximately 1,000 additional deaths during a recent heat wave that impacted much of western Europe, according to the country’s public health agency. The heat wave also caused disruptions to power generation and infrastructure.
The Public Health France agency reported Sunday that around 1,000 more deaths than expected occurred during the record-breaking heatwave. Of those deaths recorded since Wednesday, 85% were individuals aged 65 or higher, according to the Japan Times. The French Health Ministry noted a sharp increase in deaths, particularly in areas most affected by the extreme temperatures, DW reported.
The heat wave shattered records and led to the cancellation or postponement of several events in France to prevent hospitals from becoming overloaded, especially in the Paris region, Politico EU stated. The Independent UK also reported on the surge in deaths during the heatwave.
The New York Post noted that Europeans have been experiencing blistering conditions linked to dozens of deaths and damage to infrastructure. France 24 added that 85 percent of the excess deaths were among those 65 years or older.
The Straits Times reported that the French public health agency cautioned that the actual number of deaths was likely higher than initially recorded. Germany also experienced another potentially record-breaking day during the heat wave, DW noted.
