The 2026/27 season is less than a month old, yet several Football League managers are already facing pressure. Recent managerial dismissals highlight this trend. Fabio Grosso was sacked by Serie A club Fiorentina after just three games, despite the club backing him with around £130m in summer transfers. The dismissal came after the club fell to the bottom of Serie A, but was still considered a shock due to the financial investment.
In the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou holds the record for the shortest non-interim tenure, having been sacked by Nottingham Forest mid-press conference just 39 days into his contract following a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea last season. Liam Rosenior was dismissed by Chelsea in April after 106 days of a contract set to run until 2032. Currently, Fulham's Alvaro Arbeloa, Tottenham's Roberto De Zerbi, and Ipswich's Gary O'Neil are all under pressure from fans after only three games this season.
This rush to judgment is occurring despite the success of clubs like Arsenal, who maintained faith in Mikel Arteta during difficult times. Two key factors are driving the change. Social media creates echo chambers where perspective is lost, leading to emotional reactions and virtual protests. Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has admitted that manufactured crisis talk among fans can negatively impact players. Fans now seem to want instant success, a consequence of living in a “McDonald’s society.”
The financial growth of football also contributes to the lack of patience. The consequences of European qualification, promotion, and relegation create a more aggressive approach to achieving immediate results. The richest game in football is now the Championship.
