Manchester United’s interest in signing Lewis Hall has been renewed after Newcastle United’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, indicated the club will need to sell players to maintain financial stability and continue growing revenues.
United identified Hall as a key target to bolster their left-back position following a midfield rebuild that included the signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba. However, a deal failed to materialize last summer as Newcastle were unwilling to part with the player without a substantial offer, and United had already committed significant funds to midfield acquisitions. Luke Shaw started every league game last season, but INEOS recognized the need for depth, especially with the return of Champions League football and a heavier fixture list.
Ross Wilson explained the necessity of player sales in a recent interview with The Telegraph: “These are the conversations that every club's got to have (selling top talent to balance the books). We're working on a regulatory framework that isn't for Newcastle United. It's for everyone. So this isn't a choice. This is what we've got to do. And if you don't do it, then just keep the squad you've got forevermore. They'll grow old and achieve less and leave for nothing.” He further stated that without player trading, the club risks stagnation despite growing revenues under chief executive David Hopkinson.
Lewis Hall is described as a technically gifted, two-footed left-back capable of playing in multiple positions, a quality that attracted the attention of Manchester United manager Michael Carrick.
