Mozilla has released Firefox 156, featuring a significantly faster built-in PDF viewer and performance improvements for displaying large images. The update also includes several fixes for audio and platform-specific issues.
Mozilla published the Firefox 156.0 release binaries ahead of its official Tuesday announcement. A key improvement in this version is the speed of the built-in PDF viewer, now starting up to 45% faster. This enhancement aims to provide a more responsive experience for users working with PDF documents directly within the browser.
Beyond the PDF viewer, Firefox 156 also addresses performance concerns related to large JPEG images. The update improves memory and CPU usage when displaying these images, particularly when they are scaled down to fit the webpage. This optimization should result in smoother browsing and reduced resource consumption.
Fixes included in Firefox 156 address issues such as high-sample-rate FLAC audio failing to play in MP4 files on some websites, as well as various platform-specific bugs and minor adjustments. While enabling Vulkan Video decoding for newer NVIDIA GPUs was tested in nightly builds, it was not included in the final Firefox 156 release and remains available only in those builds.
