A federal judge has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump from officially renaming the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper found that the board did not have the authority to rename the facility.
The ruling also blocked the theater's planned closure for renovations. Judge Cooper ordered the removal of the president's name from the institution and delayed the planned renovations at the Kennedy Center.
Rep. Joyce Beatty, who sued over the renaming attempt, stated: "The Kennedy Center is an institution that belongs to the American people, not to Donald Trump."
President Trump criticized the federal judge's ruling on Friday. Trump referred to the decision as an "Obama judge" ruling that was blocking the Kennedy Center renaming.
The ruling delays planned renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and orders the removal of Trump's name from the institution.
In response to the judge's decision, Trump stated that he now has "no interest" in renovations. He said he will instead work with Congress to oversee what he described as a "failing institution."
