SV Elversberg, a small German village club, has begun its maiden Bundesliga season with two wins, including a victory over Bayer Leverkusen. They will host defending champions Bayern Munich on Sunday.
Four years after playing in the fourth division, Elversberg has become the smallest town in German league history to host a top-flight side this season. The club, representing Saarland, Germany’s smallest non-city state, achieved promotion after three promotions in five seasons. Despite losing key personnel along the way – coach Horst Steffen to Werder Bremen, striker Younes Ebnoutalib to Eintracht Frankfurt, and sporting director Nils-Ole Book to Borussia Dortmund – they secured automatic promotion.
Club technical director Josef Welzmueller attributes their success to consistent effort. “I know that it sounds like magic or like a fairytale,” Welzmueller told AFP this month, “(but) we did it step by step, and it didn't feel like a fairytale, to be honest.” Welzmueller, who replaced Book, emphasized the importance of maintaining the club’s identity. “We choose the players that fit our playing style, we chose the coach and the staff that fit the playing style, so we can't change anything,” he said.
Notably, Elversberg rejected data-driven suggestions to alter their playing style, prioritizing their established identity. “We did a huge data analysis if we should change the playing style… it would make sense to change and avoid mistakes… but we made the playing style part of our identity and this is bigger than everything,” Welzmueller explained. They recently demonstrated this resilience by overcoming a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 against Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Elversberg’s home stadium currently has a reduced capacity of 9,500 due to renovations aimed at meeting the Bundesliga minimum of 15,000. This is in stark contrast to Bayern Munich’s 75,000-capacity Allianz Arena, which could accommodate Elversberg’s entire population five times over. Bayern will enter Sunday’s match two points behind Elversberg in the standings.
