Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is poised to reach his 50th career win when his team faces Oklahoma State on Saturday. A victory would place him among an elite group of Oregon coaches, a feat not accomplished since 2001.
Lanning, in his fifth season with the Ducks, would become only the fourth coach in Oregon history to achieve 50 wins, joining Mike Bellotti, Rich Brooks, and Len Casanova. Previous Oregon coaches like Chip Kelly (46 wins), Mark Helfrich, Willie Taggart, and Mario Cristobal all fell short of this milestone.
Looking back at his time in Eugene, Lanning reflected on the significant changes since his start. “Light years of changes, I don't think I could pick one thing,” he said Wednesday. “You're drinking out of a fire hose at first…I don't think we even did the warm-up right in our first game. I think the band's taking the field and we're still trying to kick an extra point. Obviously, the first game result was pretty poor. So we're a little bit different team since then, for sure. Certainly, I'm a lot different.” His first game as head coach resulted in a 49-3 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Saturday’s game also presents an opportunity for the Ducks to extend their nation-leading road winning streak, currently at 12 games. The Ohio State Buckeyes hold the second-longest streak at seven games. Oregon’s last road loss was a 33-30 defeat to Washington in 2023.
