Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a strong performance in Thursday night’s preseason game against the New England Patriots, throwing for 186 yards and three touchdowns. While Deshaun Watson is set to be the Browns’ Week 1 starter, Gabriel’s performance has sparked discussion about his potential role on the team.
Gabriel completed 12 of 15 passes in the first half, achieving a passer rating of 157.9, just shy of the perfect 158.3. He was largely overlooked during the Browns’ quarterback competition, with Watson as the established starter and Shedeur Sanders receiving consideration for the backup role. Gabriel, a third-round pick last year, never appeared to be a serious contender for playing time.
Browns coach Todd Monken praised Gabriel’s performance during a halftime interview on Amazon Prime Video, stating, “What a great half, happy for him. Guys played well around him. Certainly took advantage of his opportunity.” Monken noted Gabriel’s ability to understand the offense, make quick decisions, and deliver accurate short passes.
Gabriel’s touchdowns were all achieved through quick passes to open receivers. While he doesn’t possess a strong arm for deep throws, he did complete one intermediate pass for a 52-yard gain. Although the Browns have committed to Watson as their starter, the team is expected to have multiple quarterbacks available this season, and Gabriel made a case for being one of them should an opportunity arise.
