Cardiff Devils were defeated 3-2 by Coventry Blaze in a Challenge Cup match at the Skydome Arena, despite twice taking the lead. Carson Musser scored the winning goal for the Blaze with just over four minutes remaining.
Bayley Harewood opened the scoring for Cardiff, marking his first Elite League goal while playing in his first full-time season for the Devils. Griffin Ness quickly equalized for Coventry, ending the first period 1-1. Kohen Olischefski then restored Cardiff’s lead in the second period, which also saw Devils forward Riley Brandt receive a major penalty.
Ryan Richardson tied the game for Coventry with a power-play goal midway through the third period. Carson Musser then secured the 3-2 victory for the Blaze. Devils’ head coach Paul Thompson cited poor ice conditions as a factor in the loss, stating, “Those were tough conditions; the ice was terrible. It didn't sit down all night, and it's hard to play your game, but that's for both teams.” He also noted the team’s inability to extend their lead, saying, “In this game you have got to take your chances when they come along. We didn't get that 3-1 goal, which may have sealed it. Credit to the Blaze for coming back.”
Sheffield Steelers currently lead Group A after winning 6-0 against Coventry Blaze and then securing a shoot-out win against Guildford. Nottingham Panthers are second, followed by Coventry Blaze in third and Cardiff Devils in fourth. Manchester Storm’s game against Nottingham Panthers was cancelled due to “technical issues with the ice” at the AO arena.
