Dates are experiencing a surge in popularity as a versatile and healthy snack ingredient, moving beyond their traditional role as a dried fruit. Sales are up 24.1 percent through June 2026, driven by consumer demand for both indulgence and health benefits.
According to Amanda Sains-Harris, vice president of marketing for Joolies, the “date boom” has been building for years, gaining traction on social media and at industry events. She notes that dates “check a lot of boxes without feeling overly engineered,” appealing to consumers who want a treat that isn’t artificial. The category is up 24.1 percent in conventional grocery channels through June 2026, according to data from SPINS.
This trend reflects a broader shift away from highly processed snacks. Grace Finerman, founder of Date Smarter!, which makes chocolate-covered date caramels, observes a move away from artificial sweeteners like stevia towards natural sweetness. She explains that dates are naturally low-glycemic and high in fiber (6.7 to 8 grams per 100 grams), making them attractive to health-conscious consumers and athletes.
Sophia Karbowski, co-founder of Realsy, which specializes in dates, highlights the appeal of dates to fitness enthusiasts, noting a significant customer base of endurance, professional, and collegiate athletes. Dates, especially when paired with nut butters, provide sustained energy.
