Washington Commanders right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. assessed the team’s joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens as having “ups and downs,” noting initial struggles with communication and combinations on the offensive line. The practice, held in Baltimore, Maryland, ahead of Friday’s preseason game, saw the Ravens dominate for much of the session before the Commanders found their rhythm.
Conerly stated, “A little bit of ups and downs from our side. Overall, I feel our communication was right, and we were flowing. We started out slow, and then picking it up, picking it up, and we finished alright.” He specifically pointed to the run game as needing improvement, attributing early issues to unfamiliar pairings within the offensive line. “Really just getting the call a little bit more. I feel like we were just out of sync a little bit with our combos, and there was a little bit of mix-up in the lineup as well. So there were some guys next to each other that haven’t worked next to each other at all this whole camp.”
Conerly acknowledged the difficulty of integrating new players into established combinations, stating that when players haven’t worked together during camp, struggles are to be expected. The offensive line reportedly struggled against the Ravens’ defense for most of the practice, but improved towards the end. Coaches viewed the practice as an opportunity to identify weaknesses and allow players to learn from their mistakes before the regular season begins.
