Plymouth Argyle boss Tom Cleverley expressed satisfaction with the early performances of Tegan Finn and Caleb Roberts during their loans at Torquay United. Both players debuted in Torquay’s 4-0 victory over Maidenhead United on Tuesday night, with Finn scoring and assisting a goal after entering the match as a substitute, and Roberts starting the game.
Cleverley stated, “I’ve had good reports for the pair of them from the game.” He emphasized the value of the National League level, noting Torquay’s ambitions to finish in the top six, and even the top two or three, providing valuable experience. He explained this experience is important in transferring what Plymouth Argyle wants to achieve. Cleverley is aiming for both Finn and Roberts to play “25-30 games this season,” a key time in their careers.
Roberts previously played in the National League for Truro City, alongside Freddie Issaka. While Torquay plays at a level below, Cleverley believes the pressure at an ambitious club will benefit their development. He said, “Caleb obviously did well in the National League and he was going back a level, which we didn’t particularly want, but their ambitions and the size of the club was a key factor in getting that experience.” Cleverley, who went on loan three times during his own career, highlighted the importance of carefully selecting loan moves to aid player development and potentially bring players closer to the Plymouth Argyle first team.
Cleverley also hopes Freddie Issaka will impress during his loan spell with National League side Gateshead. The 20-year-old Wales youth international played 14 times for Truro City last season, following an unsuccessful loan at Bristol Rovers. “The plan is for Freddie to do the same and get 25, 30 games this season for his development,” Cleverley added. He noted Issaka’s youth and potential, stating, “He’s got a great attitude to reach that potential and the plan is that Freddie still could go out on loan.”
