Tennis icon Chris Evert is currently undergoing treatment after her ovarian cancer returned in June. The 18-time Grand Slam champion is absent from her broadcasting duties at the US Open, prompting heartfelt messages from colleagues and fans.
Sports Illustrated senior writer Jon Wertheim shared a post on X, noting that Evert is “so thoroughly decent and charitable and oozing with grace” and “so thoroughly missed” at Flushing Meadows, referencing her appearances in USTA Foundation commercials. Evert responded to Wertheim’s post with, “Thank you, Jon, miss you, too😔” and “Thank you for your kind words… Jon❤️.”
Evert announced the return of her cancer after routine CT and PET scans and underwent surgery the same month, followed by chemotherapy. She previously battled and overcame the disease in 2021 and 2023. Her sister, Jeanne, also suffered from ovarian cancer and died from the illness. In a June 24 Instagram post, Evert expressed gratitude for the support of her medical team, family, and friends, stating she had already undergone surgery and would begin chemotherapy.
Evert retired from professional tennis in September 1989, achieving 18 singles Grand Slam titles and a No. 1 ranking on the WTA Tour. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995.
