Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease came within two outs of a no-hitter Saturday, but the team ultimately defeated the New York Yankees 4-3. Nathan Lukes’ eighth-inning home run proved to be the deciding factor.
Cease carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke it up with a single to right field on Cease’s 106th pitch. The Blue Jays pitcher was seeking his second career no-hitter and what would have been the second in Toronto Blue Jays history.
Austin Wells followed Chisholm’s hit with an RBI single that reduced Toronto’s lead to 3-1, prompting the Blue Jays to replace Cease with Spencer Miles. Lukes then hit a home run in the eighth inning, extending Toronto’s lead and ultimately securing the 4-3 victory over the Yankees.
