Luciana Paes and Camila Márdila are set to star in “The Favorite Daughter” (“A Filha Favorita”), a new film by Brazilian director Rafaela Camelo. The project will follow two sisters as they confront their past after discovering their father has a third daughter.
The film will star Luciana Paes and Camila Márdila as Amélia and Luiza, respectively. Luiza returns home from Germany for what she expects to be a short family visit, but the discovery of a third sister throws the family into turmoil. The story will then become a road movie through the backlands of Ceará as the two sisters attempt to rebuild their relationship and understand their history.
Camelo co-wrote the screenplay with André Araújo (“Gugu’s World”). The film is a co-production between Deberton Filmes, led by Allan Deberton and Marcelo Pinheiro, and Germany’s Carousel Film, with Maritza Grass and Vincent Edusei producing. Both “Gugu’s World” and Camelo’s previous film, “The Nature of Invisible Things,” are currently vying to represent Brazil at the Oscars.
Márdila won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at Sundance for her performance in “The Second Mother.” She has also appeared in “Charcoal” and “I’m Still Here,” and recently finished production on “The Funeral.” Paes has starred in major Brazilian films and television series, including “Necropolis Symphony” and “Don’t Call Me Son.”
“When Luciana and Camila’s names came up together, it immediately felt right,” Camelo told Variety. “They share a certain tone as actresses: there’s humor and warmth, but also there’s something slightly unpredictable. That was exactly what I was looking for.” Camelo describes “The Favorite Daughter” as “a movie about letting go of the need to be the chosen daughter so you can finally discover who you really are when no one else is assigning seats at the table anymore.” She is interested in “how conflicts can hide in plain sight within a family, beneath trivial conversations, jokes, memories, and small awkward moments.”
Paes stated she is “very happy and excited” about the opportunity to work with Camelo and Márdila.
