Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen lead the cast of ‘Babies,’ a new film exploring a couple’s consideration of parenthood after 17 years together. Directed and written by Lauren Miller Rogen, the film draws from her own life experiences and examines the complexities of life choices.
The film centers on Annie and Aaron, a Los Angeles couple who begin questioning whether to have children after hearing friends suggest they “would be such great parents.” This realization occurs during a Fourth of July pool party where they feel outnumbered by families. Annie begins a series of internal monologues weighing the pros and cons of parenthood.
Adding to the dynamic are those around them. Annie’s friend and business partner, Becky, and her husband Ethan are expecting their third child, while dealing with a teenage firstborn. Meanwhile, Annie’s realtor friend Eliza, recently separated from her cheating husband Luke, moves in with Annie and Aaron with her young daughter Eve, providing a potential “test drive” of parenthood. A toilet-training struggle with Eve leads to Eliza cautioning Aaron to “be very careful with attaching shame to her body.”
Annie also navigates her parents’ lives, including her mother’s Alzheimer’s and her lonely father, whom she encourages to try online dating. He eventually agrees and goes on a date with Susan, a recently widowed woman, with less than promising results. ‘Babies’ is slated for release in theaters via Roadside Attractions and Vertical sometime next year.
