Hollywood Ventures Group (HVG), Big Picture Cinema Group, and Pink Sheep Productions are collaborating to adapt Abdelilah Hamdouchi’s bestselling Moroccan crime thriller, “The Final Bet,” into a feature film. The novel, first published in 2001, is considered the first Arabic detective novel translated into English.
The film will follow a young man framed for the murder of his wealthy wife, navigating systemic corruption, romance, and judicial intrigue in Casablanca. Author Abdelilah Hamdouchi expressed his excitement, stating, “It is a great source of pride to see ‘The Final Bet’ move from the page to the screen…A novel lives through language and imagination, and cinema gives its characters, tensions and story an entirely new dimension through image, performance and sound.” He added that seeing the story become a film is “deeply meaningful” to him.
Glenn Gainor, co-founder of Hollywood Ventures Group, highlighted the story’s relevance, saying, “While this is a work of fiction, it speaks to a period of profound legal and social change in Morocco and to questions of justice that transcend borders.” Jayce Barreiro, president and head of production at Big Picture Cinema Group, was drawn to the story’s setting, noting, “What sold me on ‘The Final Bet’ wasn’t just the plot, it’s that you can feel the heat and pressure of Casablanca on every page.”
Seloua El Gouni and Taha Benghalem of Pink Sheep Productions described bringing the novel to life as “both a privilege and a responsibility,” praising Hamdouchi as “one of Morocco’s great contemporary storytellers.” They believe the novel possesses the “intelligence, tension and cultural specificity to become a truly international film without losing what makes it distinctly Moroccan.”
Glenn Gainor and Taha Benghalem are adapting the novel for the screen. Benghalem will also produce alongside Seloua El Gouni for Pink Sheep Productions and Nelly Kim for Hollywood Ventures Group. Jayce Barreiro, Graem Luis and Michael Aleong of Big Picture Cinema Group are co-financing and producing, with HVG’s Nabeel Laher, Kiran Kaur and Nicholas Wittcoff executive producing. Producers are currently shopping the project at the Toronto film market, with a targeted production start date of 2027.
