3mdeb has successfully ported AMD openSIL and Coreboot to the MSI PRO B850P WiFi motherboard, offering an open-source firmware alternative to traditional closed-source options. The project, driven by a desire for increased security and sustainability, is now available for purchase pre-loaded on the motherboard.
Earlier this year, 3mdeb ported AMD openSIL and Coreboot to a Gigabyte EPYC motherboard. Their latest achievement brings this open-source firmware solution to desktop AMD Ryzen systems. Michael Larabel has been testing the firmware on an MSI PRO B850P WiFi motherboard, reporting positive performance.
3mdeb began porting their Dasharo firmware, based on Coreboot and AMD openSIL, to the MSI B850P WiFi at the beginning of the year. They recently published the first Dasharo builds and have begun upstreaming their work into openSIL and Coreboot. Previously, AMD’s openSIL proof-of-concept ports were limited to internal reference motherboards, not retail solutions.
To ensure the project’s financial viability, 3mdeb is selling the MSI PRO B850P pre-loaded with Dasharo through the 3mdeb Webshop. Assembled systems with the pre-loaded firmware are also available. 3mdeb also offers tamper-proof sealing for those prioritizing security.
Deployment on the MSI B850P WiFi required utilizing MSI FlashBIOS due to AMD ROM Armor preventing writes to the BIOS from the operating system. Initial flashing attempts failed, but 3mdeb resolved the issue within a day, enabling reliable deployment via MSI FlashBIOS. The process involves placing the firmware image, named MSI.ROM, on a USB drive and using the physical FlashBIOS button on the motherboard.
