AMC Theatres will present special screenings of two films starring Dolly Parton, “Steel Magnolias” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” following the country music icon’s death on Tuesday at age 80 after a battle with cancer.
The screenings will begin Friday, August 28, in approximately 200 AMC locations across the U.S., including theaters in Parton’s home state of Tennessee. Each participating theater will offer two matinee screenings daily through September 2, featuring one showing of each film at AMC Fan Faves value pricing.
Parton, who sold over 100 million records and won 11 Grammy Awards, also had a significant Hollywood career. She debuted in the 1980 film “9 to 5” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, playing Doralee Rhodes and earning both a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for the film’s title track.
In 1982, Parton starred opposite Burt Reynolds in the musical comedy “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” portraying Miss Mona Stangley, the owner of the Chicken Ranch, and earning another Golden Globe nomination. She later joined an ensemble cast including Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah in the 1989 comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias,” where she played Truvy Jones, a beauty technician.
