Amazon has suspended its operations with 21 Air following a Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by the carrier overrunning a runway at Miami International Airport on September 6, killing five people in a van and injuring five others. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated the company paused operations to support the investigation and review circumstances, emphasizing safety as a top priority. 21 Air had been flying packages for Amazon since 2024.
The Boeing 767, traveling at a high speed, came to a stop roughly 1,300 feet past the end of the runway before colliding with the van. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) flight information revealed one pilot warned the other about excessive speed during the approach and after touchdown, with cockpit audio also capturing automated speed and terrain warnings. The 32-year-old plane was originally built for passenger travel and operated for over two decades with foreign airlines before being converted to a cargo plane in 2015, according to Flightradar24. The NTSB investigation will review the jet’s ownership history, weather conditions, maintenance records, and 21 Air’s operations. Amazon has not responded to requests for comment regarding the decision to suspend 21 Air.
