Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the public preview of Amazon Linux 2027, its successor to Amazon Linux 2023. Benchmarks conducted by Phoronix show performance improvements with the new distribution, particularly on AMD EPYC 5th Gen “Turin” processors in the AWS cloud.
Amazon Linux 2027 features several upgrades, including Linux 7.1 as the default kernel, replacing the 6.18 kernel in Amazon Linux 2023. The distribution also utilizes GCC 16.1, a significant leap from the GCC 11.5 compiler used previously, and Python 3.14, up from Python 3.9. While some package updates, such as OpenJDK 25~26, have already been implemented in Amazon Linux 2023, the core improvements – link-time optimizations (LTO), enforcement of x86-64-v3 builds assuming AVX/AVX2 – are expected to drive performance gains.
The benchmarks were performed on an m8a.4xlarge instance equipped with an AMD EPYC 9R45 processor (16 vCPUs), 64GB of DDR5-6400 memory, and 400GB of local storage. Due to budgetary constraints, Phoronix limited testing to this single instance. Amazon Linux 2027 packages are based on Fedora 44~45 sources with modifications.
