Sony’s reboot of “Resident Evil” is projected to earn between $40 million and $50 million in its domestic opening weekend, potentially reaching $60 million. The film, directed by Zach Cregger, who also directed the 2023 hit “Weapons,” stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier battling a viral outbreak.
The film is expected to easily claim the No. 1 spot at the box office, as it is the only major release this weekend. Exhibitors are optimistic about the reboot’s performance, especially given Cregger’s recent success with “Weapons,” which grossed $270 million globally on a $38 million budget and won an Oscar for Amy Madigan. Sony invested $75 million in the production, making it the eighth installment and second remake in the horror series.
The original “Resident Evil” film, starring Milla Jovovich, debuted in 2002 and spawned five sequels, collectively earning $1 billion worldwide. However, a previous reboot attempt, 2021’s “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,” was a commercial failure, earning only $42 million globally. This new installment is expected to surpass the opening weekend records of all previous films in the franchise, including 2010’s “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” which opened to $26 million domestically and grossed $300 million worldwide.
Critics have praised the new “Resident Evil,” with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman calling it “different, and much better, than the other ‘Resident Evil’ movies.” Other films currently in theaters include “Practical Magic 2” and holdovers “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey.” The fall box office is anticipated to become more competitive as September progresses, with three new films slated for release next weekend, including a survival thriller starring Brad Pitt.
