Toho and Gkids have released a new trailer and cast details for “Godzilla Minus Zero,” the sequel to “Godzilla Minus One.” The film, set in 1949, follows Japan’s struggle to rebuild after the events of the first movie, as a new threat emerges.
The trailer confirms Godzilla was not fully destroyed and showcases a new kaiju extermination operation. Nagasawa Masami joins the cast as Makoto Aoyama, a weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau. Kunimura Jun will play Dr. Ogata, and Maehara Ko will portray Akira Hagiwara, assistant to Professor Murakami, played by Tanaka Min. Iida Motosuke returns as Akio Itagaki, the Toyo Balloon section chief from “Godzilla Minus One.” Additional cast members include Misuhashi Kenji, Okuno Eita, and Inowaki Kai.
The film is directed by Yamazaki Takashi and features more extensive effects work than its predecessor, while remaining set in post-World War II Japan. Shot entirely in Japan, “Godzilla Minus Zero” is the first domestic production designated as “Filmed for Imax,” utilizing Imax-certified digital cameras for high-definition capture and calibrated sound and imagery.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” will premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26. It will open in Japan on November 3, serving as the centerpiece gala of the Tokyo International Film Festival, and receive a wide North American release on November 6.
