The New York Yankees have signed outfielder Jarred Kelenic to a Minor League contract, hoping to revitalize the once-promising player. He will report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Kelenic, originally selected No. 6 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft by the New York Mets, was traded to the Seattle Mariners as part of a deal involving Robinson Canó and Edwin Díaz. The 27-year-old has since played for the Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, and Texas Rangers before becoming a free agent after declining a Minor League assignment from Texas.
Throughout his 443-game Major League career, Kelenic has a .211 batting average, a .654 OPS, 50 home runs, and 162 RBI. This season, he hit .219 with one home run and six RBI in 36 games with the White Sox and Rangers. However, he demonstrated strong performance in the Minors, batting .373 with a 1.102 OPS in 37 games with Triple-A Round Rock.
The Yankees’ decision is based on Kelenic’s potential, and he will initially report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to gain regular at-bats and rebuild confidence. While the Yankees recently welcomed Cody Bellinger back from the injured list and anticipate Aaron Judge’s return in September, Kelenic’s performance could create an opportunity for him in the Bronx.
