Anthony Volpe has been recalled by the New York Yankees from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, creating a unique infield situation with George Lombard Jr. remaining at shortstop. Volpe is expected to primarily play second base, filling in for the injured Jazz Chisholm Jr., while Lombard continues as the everyday shortstop.
Volpe was optioned to Triple-A on August 4, which resulted in Lombard taking over the starting shortstop position. While Volpe demonstrated defensive capabilities and hit a home run in his major league debut, inconsistent defense and a knee issue led to his demotion and eventual return.
When asked about the potential awkwardness of Volpe’s return, Lombard stated, “We’re all in the baseball world…We know what the baseball world is like, anything can happen. Excited to have him, excited to work together.” The Yankees appear to be prioritizing infield flexibility as they compete in the playoff race. Volpe has been practicing at second base in the minors to accommodate the team’s needs.
Prior to Lombard becoming the starting shortstop, Volpe had been sharing duties with Jose Caballero. Manager Aaron Boone will likely utilize Volpe’s versatility to create more lineup options during the final stretch of the season.
