NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured an image of a dust pillar within the Carina Nebula, resembling a treasure chest. The structure, located roughly 7500 light-years away in our galaxy, is sculpted by stellar winds and radiation from stars like the Eta Carinae system, which is more luminous than 5 million suns.
The featured image reveals star formation actively excavating the head of the dust pillar, creating an open ‘lid’ effect. Astronomers estimate the pillar contains approximately 70 stars in a compact cluster, believed to be around 1.3 million years old.
Within this cluster, a massive star approximately 19 times the mass of the Sun is present. NASA notes that more massive stars are rarer, brighter, and evolve more rapidly than smaller stars, describing them as “the shiniest jewels in the treasure chest.” The powerful stellar winds and radiation from stars like Eta Carinae are responsible for shaping the interstellar gas and dust into this unique formation.
