Watertown High School’s volleyball team, led by first-year head coach Havyn Heinz, began the 2026 season with victories over Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Sioux Falls Jefferson. The Arrows defeated Sioux Falls Jefferson 3-1 on Thursday, August 27, after winning 3-1 against Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Tuesday, August 25.
The Arrows won against Sioux Falls Jefferson with scores of 25-20, 25-17, 18-25, and 25-18. Coach Heinz noted that Jefferson is a “very athletic team and they're young,” adding, “They're good and you can't overlook them, that's for sure.” Watertown led for much of the first two sets, but Jefferson responded in the third, taking an early 6-0 lead. Watertown started the fourth set with an 8-2 run to secure the win. Heinz explained that in the third set, the team was playing “tense and just not trusting each other,” and she encouraged them to “focus on ourselves, have fun and compete” at the start of the fourth.
Torrence Tipton led the Arrows with 11 kills, followed by Reese Munger with eight and Carighan Klatt with six. Klatt also contributed 11 digs, while Munger added three solo and two block assists. Andi Olson served 16-17 with five aces, Maryn York went 17-19 with two aces, and Hensley Hogue was 18-18. Olson also recorded 21 digs and Hogue 16. Jaelyn Kettwig finished with 27 assists, and Cambrie Klatt had four solo and three block assists.
In the win against Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Carighan Klatt and Torrence Tipton each had 18 and 17 kills, respectively. Kettwig made 50 assists, Olson had 21 digs, Hogue 17 digs, and Carighan Klatt 11 digs. Munger had two solo blocks and three assists, and Kali Ellis and Cambrie Klatt each had 2-1. Jadaya Blackburn led Sioux Falls Jefferson with 14 kills, and Makiah Sharpe had nine. Olivia Wachal recorded 24 assists and Brianna Kindvall 14 digs.
Watertown will next compete in the Huron Invitational on August 29, facing Class AA Douglas and Sturgis, as well as Chester Area and Northwestern, both rated Class B teams. They return home to host Marshall on September 1 and Brookings on September 3.
In a separate incident on August 27, Sioux Falls Lutheran head coach Mark List, a family medicine physician with the Avera Medica Group in Sioux Falls, collapsed on the sideline during a match against Waverly-South Shore. He was treated on-site and transported to Sanford Watertown Medical Center; his condition is currently unknown. The game will be resumed at a later date.
