Quentin Tarantino is writing a novelization of his “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” spinoff, focusing on the character of Cliff Booth. The novel will be released before the forthcoming film, starring Brad Pitt, streams on Netflix.
Tarantino’s book, titled “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” will debut on December 8, published by HarperCollins. This timing coincides with the film “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,” which will first have an IMAX theatrical release on November 25 and then stream on Netflix on December 23. The novel and film are set in Hollywood in 1977, eight years after the events of the original “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
The original 2019 film starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt as an aging actor and his stunt double, set against the backdrop of the Manson family murders and the golden age of Hollywood. Margot Robbie portrayed Sharon Tate. The sequel’s logline teases that Cliff Booth, a war hero, stuntman, bartender, and cinema projectionist, continues his life with occasional “clandestine services” for friends.
Tarantino wrote the screenplay for the sequel but chose not to direct it, as he intends to retire after making ten films. He has already directed nine, including “Pulp Fiction,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “Reservoir Dogs.” He stated, “I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked…It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I’ve got to not know what I’m doing again. I’ve got to be in uncharted territory.” The original “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” earned over $400 million worldwide against a $90 million budget and received 10 Oscar nominations, winning two. Netflix is financing the sequel with a $200 million production budget.
