Karina Longworth’s podcast, “You Must Remember This,” is launching a new season, “The Bisexuals,” which explores the lives of Broadway singer Libby Holman and movie star Montgomery Clift. Longworth, who has spent 18 seasons detailing stories from classic Hollywood, says she is increasingly less interested in contemporary films. The season will examine the history of bisexuality within the entertainment industry.
Longworth stated she finds herself drawn to older Hollywood stories because she “just keep finding stories that I want to tell.” She used to watch two or three new movies a week, but now sees around 10-12 a year, preferring to focus on classical Hollywood films. She intends to continue the podcast “until I either run out of ideas or nobody wants to listen to it anymore.”
The latest season begins with Libby Holman’s story, despite her not being a traditional Hollywood figure, because Longworth prefers a chronological approach. Holman was a New York torch singer and Broadway star who faced a scandal in the 1930s. Longworth initially hesitated to include Holman because she isn’t primarily a Hollywood figure, but decided to frame the season as a dual biography alongside Montgomery Clift, allowing her to revisit his films and explore connections to other Hollywood figures like Tallulah Bankhead and Clifton Webb. Longworth noted that “even progressive people” say “bisexuality is a myth.”
Longworth will also be taking films from “You Must Remember This” on tour this fall, with scheduled stops in Houston, New York, Boston, Chicago, and other cities. Her husband, filmmaker Rian Johnson, is known for more recent Hollywood titles including the “Knives Out” series and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
