Swiss cinema is experiencing increased domestic and international success, with a growing number of English-language productions and co-productions gaining recognition at festivals like Venice. This year’s Venice Film Festival showcases a diverse range of Swiss films and co-productions, highlighting the country’s growing presence in the global film industry.
According to Nicola Ruffo, director of promotional organization Swiss Films, “For a relatively small and multilingual market, the combination of domestic relevance and international reach is significant.” Last year demonstrated “a real appetite” for Swiss films, with Petra Volpe’s ‘Late Shift’ selling over 670,000 tickets outside Switzerland by the end of 2025. Ruffo notes that Venice has “become a very good snapshot of the vitality of Swiss cinema.”
Several Swiss projects are featured at the Venice Production Bridge, including seven projects in the Gap-Financing Market and two in the Immersive Market. Pauline Julier and Nicolas Chapoulier’s historical drama “The Indies,” a co-production with Spain’s Lastor Media, is competing in Giornate degli Autori. Wim Wenders’ documentary “From Inside Out — The Architecture of Peter Zumthor,” produced by Wenders’ Road Movies and DCM group, premieres in Venice Open. Geneva-based Sunny Independent Pictures is co-producing Iranian filmmaker Ali Asgari’s main competition title “A Bit of Light.” Zurich’s Cineworx Filmproduktion is among the producers of Levan Koguashvili’s “Guria,” while Gilles Jobin’s “Sunset Motel” represents Switzerland in the Venice Immersive competition.
Ruffo emphasizes the diversity of contemporary Swiss cinema, stating, “It is difficult to reduce contemporary Swiss cinema to one aesthetic or a specific topic — and I think that is a strength.” He adds that the selection at the Venice Production Bridge offers a preview of future projects.
