Susan Sarandon says she has recently lost film roles due to her support for Palestine, alleging agencies are advising studios not to hire her. She spoke at the Venice Film Festival while promoting her new film, “The Echo Chamber.”
Sarandon stated, “I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still.” She attributes this to a “power structure” within the film industry, though she feels welcomed internationally. In 2023, Sarandon was dropped by her agency, UTA, following comments made at a pro-Palestinian rally, and has previously stated she felt shunned for calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Sarandon believes public perception regarding the historical context of Palestine has shifted, noting increased awareness of financial ties between the United States and Israel. She said, “I think that the narrative has completely changed in terms of historical relevance of Palestine and the ties of Zionists with America and our politics, that has been a major revelation for people. How much money the United States gives to Israel, nobody really understood that.”
Director Andrea Pallaoro, who directed Sarandon in “The Echo Chamber,” reportedly disregarded warnings against working with her. Sarandon expressed gratitude for his support, stating, “I thank Andrea for that, because he doesn’t listen to the warnings.” The film, a romantic drama, is based on the final screenplay of Bernardo Bertolucci and was filmed in Italy and Belgium. Sarandon concluded by saying that while some in the industry remain opposed to her views, she has found support elsewhere: “There has been a change in term of the general public, but there are still positions in my industry that are held by Zionists who have not relaxed their feelings towards me… But I found my family, I found my people and I’m OK.”
